Attend a forum to hear about adolescent sleep research from an expert, learn about FCPS’ ongoing middle school start times study, and participate in small group discussions. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Breakout sessions will be held for middle school students to share their voices. Students are encouraged to attend!

🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines. Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine.

⛱️ Summer Camp for Middle Schoolers

All rising middle schoolers are invited to attend a summer of fun and leisure with VIP Camp. VIP Camp — which takes place Monday, July 1, to Thursday, August 1 — is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and programs.

Registration is open. VIP Camp costs $100 to attend. Reach out to your school's after-school specialist for scholarship availability due to financial hardship. This camp is sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools and Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Join the Virginia Department of Education Office of Instructional Services and the Office of Special Education Family Support and Special Facilities for a live, virtual training event providing an overview of the new Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) Participation Decision-Making Tool. The overview will include background information regarding changes in the VAAP Participation Criteria Form, as well as information on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team's implementation of the new tool.

The training will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The VAAP Family Training Registration will be limited to 100 participants, on a first come, first served basis. The training will be provided by Virginia Department of Education staff members. Additional details regarding this training will be provided upon registration.

The Technical Assistance Center for Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University, in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education, will bring together professionals and families from across the Commonwealth of Virginia to engage in dialogue, discussion, and learning methods to strengthen academic outcomes for children who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind, to increase the knowledge and skills of those who can have a positive impact on a student's educational process.

Register for ODUP 2024, a two-day training event that will be held at the Virginia Crossings Hotel in Glen Allen, Virginia on June 20, 2024, and June 21, 2024, from 9-5 p.m. There is a fee to attend, families may apply for scholarship opportunities.

Celebrating 3rd Quarter Honor Roll: We are proud of the hard work students have been doing so far this year in all of their classes and we look forward to celebrating students who have earned either All A or A/B Honor Roll. Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza! Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

On Monday, May 6th, current 6th and 7th graders were given information on how to apply for our GMS National Junior Honor Society chapter. NJHS is a national service and leadership organization designed to support students’ desire for school leadership and service to the community. Members inducted at the end of this year will participate in several community service and fundraising events throughout the 2024-2025 school year. Participating in National Junior Honor Society looks great on college applications, is an opportunity to make friends and helps ignite a passion for community service.

To apply, your student MUST pick up a paper application from Student Services, fill it out completely, and return it to Student Services by Wednesday, May 15th. Your student must also have obtained a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last two quarters (which averages to having As and Bs on their report card). Glasgow Middle School staff and school leadership will evaluate each application. Applying does not guarantee admittance, and applications must contain a parent or guardian's signature to be considered. Students who are accepted into the organization will be notified by May 20th. The induction for accepted new members will hopefully take place in the GMS cafeteria on the evening of May 31st. Saturday, May 18th, 2024 beginning at 9 a.m. Glasgow will host Holmes and Poe Middle Schools to see who’ll be the Champion of Little River! 6th, 7th and 8th graders are all invited to participate. Exciting news! SoCo Summer Strings is returning this summer! The camp will be hosted at South County Middle School from July 8-19,8:30am-12:30pm, weekdays only. Camp is open to all rising 5th-9th grade students with at least one year of experience on the violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students will participate in two large ensemble rehearsals, an instrument-specific technique class, and a sectional each day. Justice Athletic Booster Club Executive Board Leadership 2024-25

At our Tuesday, May 7, 6:30pm meeting (VIRTUAL LINK), we will announce the slate of nominees to fill the Executive Board (4 officer positions) for 2024-25. We will vote on the slate at our meeting in June.
We have experienced volunteers ready to continue serving as Treasurer and Secretary. This means that our financial house, and our technology (management of our Google workspace, and electronic purchasing system/card terminals for concessions), will be in very good hands next year.
We still need nominees for President and Vice President. Our Bylaws allow for an Executive Board position to be fulfilled by up to two members (the two Board members splitting the position will share the one vote for that position).

What do the President and Vice President positions entail?

The intention of both positions is to oversee and support the administration and initiatives of the organization, NOT DO IT ALL.
We want our leaders to be enthusiastic, not overwhelmed.
Concessions is a major part of what we do to raise funds for the athletic program, but concessions will NOT take over your life. Some officers have spent more time working at concessions in the past because they had the time and inclination to do so, but it's not a requirement. The key is harnessing all the willing volunteers into a team that gets concessions done without anyone being overburdened. We also have some wonderful, hard-working students who make great concessions volunteers (special thanks this year to Coach Monica White's athletic leadership class, and various athletic teams as well).
The President and Vice-President can support other parents willing to take on specific or time-limited tasks. For example, we have an experienced volunteer committed to overseeing concessions for next year's Winter Season.

Please contact me to EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST in the President or Vice President position, or SUGGEST SOMEONE whom you think would be great. This organization makes a huge, positive impact on our Justice community. Let's keep it going strong!

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! I hope everyone's weekend was peaceful. This past Saturday, I assisted FCPS at a job fair for any vacancies in our building and other schools in FCPS. Glasgow had a great showing at the State Science Olympiad Tournament, winning medals in the following events:

2nd Place Wheeled Vehicle (Laura Prudius and Lucia Egan)
4th Place Reach for the Stars (Kiran Kane and Leo Hartness)
6th Place Flight (Lucia Egan and Leo Hartness)
6th Place Wind Power (Laura Prudius and Lucia Egan)

A special shout-out to the Agricultural Sciences team of Joan Davis and Ian Fernandez, who got 7th Place.

Congratulations to our 7 students (Elvicha Joy, Ella, Sophia, Liliana, Corinne, Julia, and Melody) who were selected to participate in the Middle School All-VA Chorus event last weekend in Richmond, VA. Our students worked with guest conductors for 3 days and sang with a combined 200+ singers at their concert on Saturday. It is such a tremendous honor to be selected for this Choir and the fact that we had 7 students selected shows just how talented and successful our music students are here at Glasgow. Please, if you see one of these students, be sure to congratulate them on their success!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, I know summer activities and programs are important! VIP (Value in Prevention) Camp is still taking applications. Here’s the link to register for VIP Camp. VIP Camp will be held at Holmes Middle School. Camp runs from July 1st, 2024 to August 1st, 2024! Camp Hours are from 8:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and Transportation will be provided. Camp is first come, first served. Once all spaces are filled, students will be added to the waitlist. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Williams at [email protected]. Glasgow MS and Justice HS are partnering again this year to offer rising 9th graders the chance to learn a new sport. Girls Field Hockey will be coming to the After School Program. More information will follow.

Please note, the After School Activity offerings will return to its original schedule. Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football, and Volleyball will return to it’s original time frame (2nd Block). We will begin our practices/tryouts for the 2nd Annual Little River Rumble Soccer Tournament. The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. There will be two teams from Holmes Middle, Poe Middle and Glasgow Middle School competing for the Little River Cup!

Morning Drop Off Kiss and Ride

When dropping your child off in the mornings, please use the kiss and ride lane and drop students off at the front of the building. Dropping students off in the back by the buses or in the parking lot is dangerous and puts your child’s safety at risk. We realize that the kiss and ride lane can back up, so we will provide students with EXCUSED TARDY passes, if students are late due to the length of the kiss and ride lane. We do ask that all cars pull as far up as they can when dropping off, so that more students can get out of the car on the sidewalk, Thank you for your help with this.

Greetings!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, I know summer activities and programs are important! VIP (Value in Prevention) Camp is still taking applications. Here’s the link to register for VIP Camp. VIP Camp will be held at Holmes Middle School. Camp runs from July 1st, 2024 to August 1st, 2024! Camp Hours are from 8:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and Transportation will be provided. Camp is first come, first served. Once all spaces are filled, students will be added to the waitlist. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Williams at [email protected]. Glasgow MS and Justice HS are partnering again this year to offer rising 9th graders the chance to learn a new sport. Girls Field Hockey will be coming to the After School Program. More information will follow.

Our actions to address this have been within Tier I classrooms, intervention blocks, Lexia intervention, after-school intervention, Saturday school events and small group targeted instruction. Please note, the After School Activity offerings will return to its original schedule. Soccer, Basketball, Flag Football, and Volleyball will return to it’s original time frame (2nd Block). We will begin our practices/tryouts for the 2nd Annual Little River Rumble Soccer Tournament. The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. There will be two teams from Holmes Middle, Poe Middle and Glasgow Middle School competing for the Little River Cup!

If you’re interested in participating, please contact Mr. Williams, Mr. Rios and/or Mr. Manrique. The last day of After School is May 30, 2024. Nominations are open for the 2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award. The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors this award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families.

This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1, 2024. The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium.

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families such as raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families. Visit the Family Summit webpage to learn about the guest speakers and to register for the event. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Academic Advising- Last Opportunity for Student Changes!

Current 6th and 7th Grade Students received a Panther Time lesson last week where they reviewed their course requests for next school year. Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Greetings! We are in the 2nd week of April! Wow! As we start the 4th quarter in full swing, it would be a good idea to connect with all your child’s teachers to ensure they know when teachers are staying after-school for their office hours and how they can stay ahead of the curve in their classes to finish the year strong. Reminder, we have a Student Holiday on Wednesday, April 10th. Last week we had a town hall event to discuss our middle school's federal identification and to provide you with important updates and information regarding our school's progress and initiatives within our SOLs and Instructional focus.

During the event, we:

Shared School Data: We will review our school's data (ie. science, math, english and absenteeism, etc.) and discussed how this information has guided our work throughout the year within classrooms, after school and Saturday sessions.
Discussed Virginia Support Framework: We provided an overview of the new Virginia Support Framework and the supports available to our school as a Federally Identified school through our Region 2 Office.
Provided Updates and Answered Questions: Our leadership team will share updates on various initiatives and programs and will be available to answer any questions or concerns you may have, as we continue our journey of continuous improvement within Science specifically.
Partnering with Parents: We explored ways in which we can partner with parents to support student attendance, provide after-school opportunities, and prepare for SOL exams. Please connect with your child’s English, Science and Math teachers on how to support.

Your participation and engagement in your child’s academic progress is crucial as we work together to ensure the success and well-being of our students.

Learn about the collaborative efforts between schools, families, and the community to support every student’s success. See how our schools are tackling complex issues and connecting families with essential resources such as childcare, medical services, and transportation.

Through personalized communication and reeducation efforts, we are fostering a culture of engagement and prioritizing student attendance. Making sure every student feels safe, supported, included, and empowered is Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

No Tardies for All of Quarter 3!

This week, over 500 Glasgow students were invited to celebrate that they had NO tardies for the entire quarter! We are so proud of these students for their accomplishments and are always looking for ways to reward students for making strong choices.

Library Event

Join the Fairfax County Public Librarians at Woodrow Wilson Public Library to make a bird feeder. All supplies are provided. This is a free event for the whole family!

Student Afterschool Activities

Spring is slowly shaping up and we’re ready to resume outside activities. As a reminder, After School will not meet on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024! Please remind your student(s) to sign up for after school during their lunch period if they’re interested in participating in after school.

Flag Football will begin again next week and will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 6th and 7th Grade will play on Tuesdays and 8th graders will play on Thursdays. Please remember to wear the appropriate footwear.

Solar Eclipse Preparation

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations in accordance with the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance.

The COVID-19 isolation period of 5 days is no longer recommended.

The new respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, to include COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Students who have symptoms of, tested positive for, or have been diagnosed with, a respiratory virus e.g., COVID-19, influenza, RSV may return to school when:

Student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND
Student’s symptoms have improved or resolved
Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Greetings. I hope you and your families are enjoying a peaceful and rejuvenating time until students return on April 3rd. It is the 4th quarter! Wow! As we return to school in April, I wanted to share some important updates and reminders with you:

Student Holidays: Please note that there will be student holidays on April 1st and 2nd for our teacher work day and staff development day. We appreciate your understanding and support as our staff engage in professional development to better serve our students.
PBIS Grade Level Open Campus Celebration: We will be hosting PBIS Grade Level Open Campus celebrations for students who have demonstrated exemplary behavior aligned with our Panther Principles. These celebrations will take place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday when we return from break. We look forward to recognizing and celebrating our students' positive behavior.
4th Quarter and SOL Testing: With the 4th quarter upon us, we are gearing up for the VDOE SOL testing in May. Our Science, Math, and English departments have been diligently preparing to ensure our students are well-prepared for these assessments and meet state and federal accountability measures. Please encourage your child to stay focused and engaged in their studies as we approach testing season.
Federal Accountability Indicators: Our school has been classified under the Federal Accountability Indicators of Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI), with a specific focus on 8th-grade science. To our 8th-grade parents, we urge you to work closely with your child's teacher to ensure they receive the support they need in their science classes. We offer after-school support and student resources to ensure your child is adequately prepared for their SOL exams.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize. Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Glasgow Spelling Bee 2024

Friday Night at Glasgow Middle School proved to be an exciting evening as twenty-one students participated in the 2024 Spelling Bee for the chance to represent GMS at the County Spelling Bee. The students clearly took the task very seriously and their preparation resulted in an impressive display of spelling prowess. After 22 rounds of competition, seventh grader Muhammad Gulzar emerged as the Glasgow Middle School Spelling Bee Champion with the winning word "dendrochronology." It is worth noting, that our winner Muhammad is the younger brother of the 2022 Glasgow Spelling Bee Champion.

Thank you to all the participants for their hard work and for tackling words such as senescent, leks, conjunto, grebe, hypocaust and luciferin among others: Nafiza Sultana – runner up; Jonathan Baires, Alexander Cruz-Portillo, Truman ‘Red’ Linden, Afiuddin Mohammed, Marlei Boykin, Molly McGrorey, Kaleb Zewdu, Lilly Cornelius, Stefani Criz-Portillo, Sampurna Joshi, Sheela Bahrami; DeeAnnie Scotland, Gage Snook, Agustin Wachs, Henry Castle, Julia Clarke, Joseph Ewnetu, Kendall Herbas Vera and Katherine Jackson. The Glasgow community is so very proud of you!

We also extend a special thank you to the judges who worked very hard to evaluate the competition: Pronouncer: Kim Lanoue, Leah Richardson and Felisa Klubes, as well as the staff, especially Mr. Williams and Mr. Powell.

Glasgow Blue Ribbon

Over the last two weeks, the Glasgow Middle School Music Department has taken different ensembles to State Assessment to be adjudicated on their performance. It is our pleasure to announce that we have been named a “Blue Ribbon School,” which is the highest honor bestowed by the Virginia Music Educators Association for musical excellence. This is awarded to schools who receive Superior ratings for their most advanced Band, Choir and Orchestra Ensembles. In total, Glasgow has Seven ensembles perform at assessment, all earning Superior or Excellent ratings. We are so proud of our students. Go Glasgow!

We are excited to invite you and your family to a special community event hosted by Glasgow Middle School aimed at fostering team building, community engagement, service learning, and much more.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. s. View Regulation 1502. Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! I hope this is reaching you well. Our PTA meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday at 7:00PM. The end of the Quarter is on March 22nd. Spring Break begins on March 25, 2024.

April is a critical month, as we prepare for SOL testing. We have developed a school improvement plan that utilizes data from SOLs, FCPS benchmarks, classroom tests/quizzes and exit tickets for various student groups to determine areas for opportunity. For us, our 8th Grade science SOL scores and Absenteeism is a big focus for us. Our actions to address this have been within Tier I classrooms, intervention blocks, Lexia intervention, after-school intervention, Saturday school events and small group targeted instruction. Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher about their grades and classroom performance, which can strengthen the communication and trust between staff and community. Clear and effective communication with families to support student success is key. We utilize talking points, email, parent phone numbers, virtual options and Schoology to communicate. Also, as a plug to maintain visibility and accessibility to students and families, I am in our hallways and classrooms everyday; and I value our community meetings and home visits that allow me to connect with the larger community.

As we get closer to the end of the quarter, our teams are focused on making sure all our students have the appropriate resources and materials for their classes, such as technology, learning materials and scaffolding needed to learn the material. We have also been reminding students of the Students Rights and Responsibilities and reteaching expected behaviors within our PBIS systems and Panther Time lessons to ensure our students are practicing Kindness, Commitment and Safety each week. During this hiring season, we are selecting and retaining high quality staff to ensure Glasgow MS has the best candidates available in the hiring season.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) School-Based Administrator Performance Evaluation Program 23-24

On Monday, March 18, Glasgow Middle School parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

State Science Olympiad Tournament

Congratulations! Glasgow had a very successful regional competition on Saturday, March 2. Out of 26 competing teams, Glasgow was the sixth-highest school and for the third year in a row, Glasgow secured a spot at the State Science Olympiad Tournament (to be held April 6 at the University of Virginia). Glasgow students won medals in the following events:

First Place in Wind Power (Laura Prudius and Lucia Egan)
First Place in Reach for the Stars (Kiran Kane and Liliana Torres)
Second Place in Wheeled Vehicle (Laura Prudius and Lucia Egan)
Second Place in Fossils (Kiran Kane and Lilly Scherer)
Third Place in Optics (Leo Hartness and Nicolas Robinson)
Third Place in Road Scholar (Laura Prudius and Emmett Stadtler)
Fourth Place in Disease Detectives (Hillary Nguyen and Mariam Oukchir)
Fifth Place in Air Trajectory (Ketki Khadilkar and Aura Sripechpong)

Plus we had nine additional top 10 finishes! It was truly a team effort to make it to the States and everyone should feel very proud. Well done!

Student Activities

Are you looking for Summer fun for your student(s)? Well, VIP (Value in Prevention) Summer Camp is once again taking applications. VIP Camp is for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders residing in Fairfax County. If you’re interested, please click here for more information and to register. Flag Football is returning on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Sign Ups will take place during your lunch period. Please ensure your students are wearing proper footwear. Students that are not wearing appropriate footwear will not be allowed to participate.

Hoop It Up Practices will begin on Tuesday (6th Grade), Wednesday (7th Grade) and Thursday (8th grade). Practices will take place during 2nd (activity) block.

Our normal After School basketball clubs will take place during 1st Block except on Mondays.

Fairfax County Budget

#InvestInExcellence ✨ The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from Fiscal Years 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in 2024. The county’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements. If the county returns to 52.6% for the upcoming year, that would be $63 million more as an investment in excellence for our schools.

Join a Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation on the opioid crisis in Northern Virginia will be held Monday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. (Please enter through Door #14). Attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed will be suitable for students in grade 6 and higher. Language interpretation will be available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed.

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Friday, March 22, 1-5:30 p.m., Annandale District Office. Walk-ins are accepted until 5 p.m.

Have you ever heard of peanut butter slices? Yes, it's just like a cheese slice but peanut butter. Last year, an FCPS Young Scholar student invented them as part of the Invent Virginia Club. This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. It’s March Book Madness time at the Glasgow MS library. Students can participate by viewing the slideshow and trailers embedded within each book cover. Students can vote weekly to help their favorite titles advance in the bracket. Students who participate weekly will be eligible for a prize from the librarians.

Hoop It Up Basketball Game: Mark your calendars! Our annual Hoop It Up basketball game is scheduled for April 19th at 6:00 PM. Institute for the Arts: Students in all FCPS secondary schools can enroll in the Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a two- or three-week summer Arts enrichment program for students in rising 7th through 12th grades. Students create their own schedules in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance from nearly 60 courses offered. Transportation is provided from around the county. Women’s History Month

Join the FCPL librarians at the Woodrow Wilson Public Library for Women’s History Month events in March. All events are free to the public.

Thursday, March 7th from 4 to 5 pm, we will be building bridges and learning about Emily Warren Roebling who helped to build the Brooklyn Bridge. This event is for school-age children.
Saturday, March 9th from 3 to 5:30 pm, we will be showing the movie, Suffragette. This movie is rated PG-13 and is for all ages. An adult must be with children ages birth through five years.
Saturday, March 16th from 10:30 am to 11:00 am, we will be having a Saturday story time featuring stories about famous women in history!

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

Bipartisan Study Finds Virginia Public School Divisions Receive Less Funding per Student Than Other States

The School Board recently adopted FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget. Meeting budget needs becomes more of a challenge with underfunding by the state, using staffing formulas that continue to result in school districts not receiving the actual support needed for excellent public education. A staffing formula is the method for calculating the number of positions that need to be assigned to meet program needs.

Did You Know?

In July 2023, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) released a study of Virginia’s K-12 funding formulas. The report found that Virginia school divisions receive less funding per student than the 50-state average, the regional average, and many of Virginia’s neighboring states including West Virginia, Maryland, and Kentucky. I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the vibrant energy of March! As we navigate through this month, I wanted to share a few updates and reminders with you.

Firstly, I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Personally, I cherished the time spent with my son at the barbershop, enjoying a comedy show in DC, and attending a meaningful worship service on Sunday. It's these moments that truly enrich our lives and strengthen our bonds with loved ones.

I'd like to draw your attention to the upcoming 2024 FCPS Family Engagement Survey. Keep an eye out for this survey, as your feedback is invaluable to us in our ongoing efforts to enhance our school community.

A friendly reminder that Tuesday, March 5th, is a Student Holiday. Please plan accordingly and enjoy the extra time with your family.

With only three weeks left before Spring Break, I encourage you to maintain open communication with your child's teachers. Checking in on their progress and grades ensures that we're all on the same page and can provide the support they need to succeed.

In exciting news, we'll be launching a PBIS Tier I incentive program focused on punctuality. We'll be recognizing the top 3 classes in each grade level for having no tardies with a celebratory donut party right before Spring Break. The period we'll be targeting for this initiative is 2nd block, given its daily occurrence.

I want to emphasize the importance of attendance at school and in class. Consistent attendance directly impacts your child's academic performance and growth. Please continue to have conversations with your children about the significance of being present and engaged in their learning journey.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. Together, we can ensure they make continuous progress and achieve their fullest potential.

FCPS Summer Camps & Learning Programs

🥁 Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.

CTE programs are available for grade 6-11 students to explore CTE program areas, develop skills, and begin career exploration. IFTA allows students to select from nearly 90 classes in art, dance, health and physical education 9, music, and theater. Visit the IFTA webpage to register.

Summer Learning

Programs are also available for high school students to fulfill the Economics and Personal Finance course requirement, earn a high school course credit via this summer’s online campus program, or recover one high school course credit through the Credit Recovery Academy.

FCPS’ free online class for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to continue developing their academic, reading, and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher.

Student and Family Surveys Newsletter: Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

Welcoming environment
Communication
Student success
Advocacy
Family and school partnerships
Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

💭 Share Your Thoughts on Schoology

FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:

Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
Secondary students via email from Naviance.

Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Glasgow Parents and Community:

As we near the end of February 2024, I wanted to share some important updates and events happening at our school, as well as valuable resources for our community. We still are finishing WIDA testing, working on our goals to increase enrollment within Algebra I in 8th grade in the coming years and monitoring our instruction through our instructional visits to teachers' classrooms, related to our Project Momentum status with our SIIP goals.

Academic Advising: Our Student Services Department is currently conducting academic advising sessions to support our students in planning their educational journey. These sessions are designed to provide personalized guidance and assistance to students as they navigate their academic pathways. We encourage students and parents to actively participate in these sessions to ensure informed decision-making regarding their future endeavors.

Ramadan: This year, the holy month is expected to begin on Monday, March 11 and end on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Students who are fasting will be provided with an alternative space during lunch blocks, so long as they utilize the spaces respectfully and appropriately. If there are any issues with students accessing fasting spaces during lunch blocks, parents/caregivers will be notified.

Call for Track and Field Coaches: We are still seeking dedicated coaches to support our track and field team. If you have a passion for athletics and are interested in volunteering your time to mentor and guide our student athletes, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to [email protected] for more details or to express your interest.

Important Resource: Information on Eating Disorders: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has provided valuable resources on understanding and addressing eating disorders. It's essential for families to be aware of the signs and symptoms associated with eating disorders to provide support and assistance to those in need. Middle School Student Development Research: Research indicates that middle school is a critical period of development and growth for students. Understanding the unique challenges and opportunities during this stage can help parents and educators better support our students as they navigate their academic and personal journeys. We continually want you to “co-parent” with us to ensure all our students have what they need each day. Thank you for all your support and partnership.

Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge

The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 10:45 a.m., at Hayfield Secondary School. The event features a public tasting of student dishes and demonstrations from two local celebrated chefs.

The student challenge at the heart of this event is to create healthy, delicious, and culturally diverse school menu items that meet USDA guidelines. Entries will be judged by a panel including celebrity chefs, school food professionals, and local food producers. The public is invited to vote for their favorite dish.

Chefs Najmieh Batmanglij and Chris Morgan of Joon will offer a demonstration at 11:15 a.m. Public tasting of student dishes will get underway at noon.

Student-created dishes from this annual event have been featured on school menus throughout the Greater Washington Region. It is free to attend, but registration is required.

Track and Field

First ever Track and Field season is approaching and we’re looking for ONE more coach! Whether you are a FCPS staff or not, a seasoned veteran or not, all are welcome! Coaches will be provided with detailed training plans for all the events (100m, 200m, 400, 800m, 1600m, long jump, shot put) and all the information/equipment needed will also be provided. Practices will be twice a week at GMS and competition will be held on Saturdays mornings. This is a perfect opportunity to be a part of history and make a difference as this will be the first ever season of Track and Field for GMS. Visits from Justice High School Counselors

Justice Counselors will be back on February 26th & 27th to meet with students individually to finalize their requests. Students attending Edison HS will have counselor visits on Wednesday February 7th and Falls Church HS will also meet with School Counselors sometime later in the month of February. Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge

Chefs Najmieh Batmanglij and Chris Morgan of Joon will offer a demonstration at 11:15 a.m. Public tasting of student dishes will get underway at noon.

Student-created dishes from this annual event have been featured on school menus throughout the Greater Washington Region. It is free to attend, but registration is required.

El Concurso Culinario Real Food for Kids se celebrará el sábado 2 de marzo, a las 10:45 a.m., en la Escuela Secundaria Hayfield. El evento incluye demostraciones de dos famosos chefs locales y una muestra pública de los platos de los estudiantes.

Training Opportunities Provided by the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) and VDOE

PEATC, in collaboration with the VDOE, is offering an online, self-paced SEAC training session aimed at helping members and other interested participants understand the role of the local SEAC in Virginia and build a more effective and efficient advisory committee. A certificate of completion will be provided for all who complete the training.

Building Strong Parent Advocates Online Self-Paced Training: Open March 4 - March 25, 2024

PEATC, in collaboration with the VDOE, provides the Building Strong Parent Advocates training to provide families with information that will help them build a solid foundation to understand the special education process while empowering them to be their child's best advocate. A certificate of completion for six (6) hours will be provided for all who complete this training.

Teen Cuisine

Hello Glasgow Family! We will be starting a new session of Teen Cuisine on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024. Teen Cuisine. Teen Cuisine teaches students important kitchen skills,(ie cutting, preparing from scratch, kitchen etiquette, and most importantly eating what they make). I will be disseminating forms for this club starting March 1st, 2024. Once we’ve reached our max of 20 students, the club will then be a closed group. If you’re interested in participating, please have your student see me during their lunch period for sign up forms. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

Spring Track & Field

Spring Track & Field will be starting the week of April 3rd. If you’re interested in participating, students must have a current physical. Track and Field Season

First ever Track and Field season is approaching and we’re looking for ONE more coach! Whether you are a FCPS staff or not, a seasoned veteran or not, all are welcome! Coaches will be provided with detailed training plans for all the events (100m, 200m, 400, 800m, 1600m, long jump, shot put) and all the information/equipment needed will also be provided. Practices will be twice a week at GMS and competition will be held on Saturdays mornings. This is a perfect opportunity to be a part of history and make a difference as this will be the first ever season of Track and Field for GMS. George Mason University Early Identification Program Now Accepting Nominations for the 2024-2025 School Year

The Early Identification Program (EIP) is a multiyear (five year), college preparatory program for students who will be the first in their family to attend a four-year college in the United States. EIP is a collaborative effort between Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and George Mason University (GMU). The EIP is one of three programs that comprise the College Success Programs in FCPS. The EIP goes from 8th grade through 12th grade.

To meet the EIP nomination criteria, students must:

Be a 7th Grade student in a FCPS school that offers the EIP.
Be the FIRST in the family to pursue a four-year college degree in the United States.
Have the academic potential to enroll in a pre-college curriculum in high school, taking advanced level courses.
Be nominated by a school counselor, teacher, or caring adult to the EIP school-based sponsor at their Middle School.

Deadline for nominations: February 29, 2024.

Glasgow Middle School Course Selection

The course selection process for the 2024-2025 school year is beginning! This week, Rising 7th and 8th grade Glasgow students will receive lessons about course options. Counselors will be meeting with students for academic advising throughout January and February in their Social Studies/History and Health/PE classes. Once students begin academic advising, course selection previews will be available in SIS ParentVue and SIS StudentVue by selecting “Course Request”. Please talk with your child about the classes that they want to take. Rising 9th grade students will meet with counselors later in the month of February. Stay tuned to future Gazettes for more information for students and families about course offerings at Glasgow!

Snowball Dance

The 6th and 7th grade Snowball Dance (Hosted by the Glasgow PTA) has been rescheduled for February 24th (6:30pm-9pm). Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! If you missed our February PTA Meeting this past week, please see the recording here for viewing. As we approach the halfway mark of February, I want to remind you of some important dates and opportunities to stay engaged in your child's education.

Firstly, it's a critical time to connect with your child's teachers regarding their grades and any classroom needs they may have. Your involvement and support are crucial in ensuring their academic success. Please take the time to reach out and communicate with teachers as needed.

As a reminder, there will be a student holiday on February 19th, followed by the mid-point of the quarter on February 23rd. These are important milestones to keep track of as we progress through the academic year.

Looking ahead, please note that the two days following Spring Break will be a Teacher Work Day and a Professional Development day for our teachers and staff. Therefore, there will be student holidays for both FCPS and Glasgow MS students. Please plan accordingly.

Last week was School Counseling Week, and if you haven't already, I encourage you to reach out and show your appreciation to your child's school counselor. Their dedication and support play a crucial role in the well-being and success of our students.

As we move forward into the second semester, we remain committed to partnering with you in the education and development of our GMS students. Research on best practices in co-parenting emphasizes the importance of collaboration between parents and educators. Together, we can ensure that our students have the support and resources they need both academically and behaviorally to thrive. Also, I wanted to update the community on a data point from the last message I sent. It was related to tardy data and should have been related to the decrease in classroom cut data. Apologies.

In the coming weeks, we have several exciting events planned, including field trips and engaging units in our students' classes. Your involvement and support are invaluable, and we look forward to continuing to work together to provide the best possible education for our students.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

We strongly encourage all FCPS middle and high school students to click on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal for homework help, concept review, writing support, and test prep—anytime, anywhere.

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Art Open Studio

Art Open Studio is BACK!!! Do you like to draw, sketch or make art! Bring your favorite art tools & sketchbook to hang out and make some art with other student artists on Thursdays, during 1st Block! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Schickel [email protected].

As warmer weather continues to creep into the area, our clubs will begin to move back outside. Please dress and plan accordingly for this. If you’re interested in playing any sport in After School, it is important to wear the appropriate shoes to minimize injury. We will begin to monitor this more closely; if your student isn’t wearing the appropriate footwear, they will not be allowed to participate.

Visits from Justice and Annandale School Counselors

Justice and Annandale High School Counselors will be coming to present academic advising lessons to 8th Grade students on Monday, February 5th. Please help your child be at school on-time Monday morning! The lessons will be taking place during Panther Time and continuing through 2nd period. At the end of the presentations students will start selecting their courses for 9th grade. Justice Counselors will be back on February 26th & 27th to meet with students individually to finalize their requests. Students attending Edison HS will have counselor visits on Wednesday February 7th and Falls Church HS will also meet with School Counselors sometime later in the month of February. More information to come on that.

Curriculum Night

Rising 9th Grade Curriculum Night at Justice High School – Thurs, Feb. 15, 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm (Snow Date: Tues, 2/20)

For all rising 9th graders who will be attending Justice High School in SY24-25, Justice will be hosting a curriculum night for parents and students to hear about the courses in the core content areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. There will be an optional electives fair for parents/students to learn more about the different electives available for rising 9th graders.

Greetings! I hope this message finds everyone well. This weekend I was involved in recruiting for FCPS at an instructional fair and enjoyed some time with my 4 and 7 year old. I hope everyone’s February is starting off well. National School Counseling Week 2024 (#NSCW24) is Feb. 5-9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Speaking of our school counselors…the School Counseling team will be hosting Caregiver Coffees for current 6th and 7th grade families about academic advising on February 13th at 2:30pm and February 20th at 7:30am. A few celebrations: 1. Reviewing our data, I see that we have reduced our Level 4 & 5 behaviors within the SR&R from this time last year by 48%, the previous year was a reduction of 20%. This is a data point that parents and the community asked me in the end of the year survey to make a priority. Happy about the progress but still want to decrease even more. 2. Shout out to JMU alumni, we have received a number of requests from 2024 education graduates that they only want to work at Glasgow MS and that they are pursuing our school as their destination. This is great news! It was a pleasure this past week receiving some awesome feedback from our new OT’s in the building:

“As OTs, we travel to many schools over the course of the week and have seen all kinds of school environments. We have been to Glasgow twice now, and we have been given such a warm welcome each time. We have been wandering in the halls trying to find our way, and there has been no shortage of people volunteering to help us find where we need to go. The teachers and IAs have also been so flexible with scheduling and allowing us to come into their classes to see students. The helpfulness of everyone we have encountered has created such a great environment to work in. Thank you!”

Track and Field

First ever Track and Field season is approaching and we’re looking for ONE more coach! Whether you are a FCPS staff or not, a seasoned veteran or not, all are welcome! Coaches will be provided with detailed training plans for all the events (100m, 200m, 400, 800m, 1600m, long jump, shot put) and all the information/equipment needed will also be provided. Practices will be twice a week at GMS and competition will be held on Saturdays mornings. This is a perfect opportunity to be a part of history and make a difference as this will be the first ever season of Track and Field for GMS. Superintendent to Present FY 2025 Proposed Budget

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will present the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Reid’s presentation, as well as other budget documents, will be available after she presents to the board.

IAAT Assessment for Grade 6 Students

The Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) assesses a student’s algebra aptitude. FCPS students who access a Sixth Grade Advanced Math curriculum will take the IAAT during the winter testing window (February 26 - March 1, 2024). Results from this assessment are used as one component of the course placement process for Algebra 1 Honors in Grade 7.

Parents/guardians of students eligible to take the IAAT will receive a notification letter and opt-out form. Printable PDFs of notifications and opt-out forms are available in eight languages on the IAAT webpage

Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is a process to determine the underlying cause or functions of a student’s behavior that impedes social, emotional, and academic learning.
Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a plan that utilizes positive behavioral interventions and supports to address behaviors that interfere with learning.

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! We are headed into the second semester and third quarter next week! Some students will have new semester classes which may impact their schedule. Parents and students can also access the new class schedule through ParentVue or StudentVue. We will continue our next cycle of intervention with a priority on Special Education, Science, and Absenteeism

On Saturday, January 13th, 2024 Glasgow hosted the US CHESS ASSOCIATION competition. We had 7 Glasgow students compete in a field of over 70 participants. We thank the students and families that came out and supported the event. We had some friendly adult competition as well. It was a great experience for our school and family.
