Dear Glasgow Family,

Earlier this school year, we experienced a significant disruption to our day when a false threat was posted to social media and shared around the community. As a result, many parents came to pick up students early from school. After the event, we gathered feedback and our own observations of the day and refined our emergency release plans in partnership with Assistant Superintendent for Region 2, Megan Vroman. Below are some updates or clarifications on our process.

Communication to the community:

Clear communication to our parents/caregivers that a photo ID is required for student pick up. If the parent is not the adult picking up the student(s), the person coming to pick up the student(s) must also have a proper photo ID and be on the Emergency Care Card.

Both texts and emails will be sent to parents/caregivers and staff with updates on the situation at the school.

Process parents/caregivers will need to follow if they come to school to pick their student up early:

  • Enter the parking lot from either Fairfax Parkway or Conrad Road.
  • The parking lot entrance (near the Glasgow marquee) to the bus loop will not be available for cars to enter.
  • There will be security in the parking lot directing the traffic flow.
  • Parent/caregivers will be provided the Parent/Student Reunification Form (PSRF) that will need to be filled out.
    • Bi-lingual staff will be on-site to support parents/caregivers in completing the form.
    • Parents/caregivers must have a proper photo ID.
    • If someone other than the parent/caregivers picks up a student, they must have a photo ID and be listed on the Emergency Care Card.
  • Parents will follow staff direction to DOOR #7 (NOTE: Door #1 will NOT be utilized)
  • Staff members will re-unify each student with their parent/caregiver at DOOR #7.
  • Parents will then exit the school grounds via the bus loop entrance, which will have staff there directing traffic.

Staff Roles:

  • Staff have been assigned specific roles.
  • Staff are assigned to the parking lot to support the flow of traffic to Door #7.
  • Bi-lingual staff are assigned to the parking lot to support parents/caregivers in completing the Parent/Student Reunification Form (PSRF).
  • Staff will bring students from class to door 7 to re-unify with their parent/caregiver.
  • Staff members in the front office will have the sole responsibility answering phone calls.
  • Staff will monitor door #3 (which will be locked) to ensure students from the modulars can access the main building.
  • Assistant principals will be in the parking lot and will communicate with staff assigned to retrieve students from their classroom.  This will ensure that students are at Door 7 for pick-up.

Respectively,

Deirdre Lavery

Interim Principal

October 29, 2024

Dear Families,

In the coming weeks, FCPS will be testing out a new Student Experience Survey. It will help the school division better understand students’ experiences in our schools. Your child’s classroom will be a part of the pilot for the Student Experience Survey. It will take about 30 minutes, and we will choose a date between December 2-13 to complete the survey. If you would like to view the survey, please visit the Student Experience Survey webpage [at www.fcps.edu/student-experience-survey-pilot].

If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, you may opt them out using the online form on the Student Experience Survey webpage [or by completing the opt-out form attached to this message]. You only need to complete the opt-out form by Friday, November 8, if you do not want your child to participate in the Student Experience Survey.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to make improvements in FCPS schools. If you have questions about the Student Experience Survey, please contact [email protected].

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! Our new teachers are engaging in professional development and activities this coming week to ensure they are ready for our Glasgow students on August 19th! We have Jump Start taking place this week and all our teachers will be returning after this coming week.

Here are a few reminders of upcoming events:

  • August 15th, 2024: Open House (Session I: 9-11 & Session II: 1-3)
  • September 11th, 2024: Back To School Night from 6-8:00PM (TJ Presentation from 5:00-6:00PM)

Important Links:

In Virginia, it's required by law for students to have certain immunizations to attend school. This is supported by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Families of students with incomplete immunization records need to provide acceptable proof of immunization to their child's school as soon as possible. You can find the list of required immunizations on the General Registration Immunizations webpage.

If your child’s immunizations are incomplete, here's what you need to do:

  1. Get your child’s immunization record from one of these places:
  • Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
  • If your child was immunized outside Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
  • Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
  • Submit your child’s immunization record to your child’s school.
  • Families should submit their child’s completed immunization records before September 30.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more information. If you would like to speak with a FCPS staff member, please leave a message at one of the phone numbers below. Thank you for supporting our students' health and well-being.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Deirdre Lavery, Interim Principal

Varsity Tutors Starting in the school year 2024-25 we are replacing Tutor.com with Varsity Tutors

After careful consideration, FCPS has discontinued our contract with Tutor.com effective June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide. While feedback about Tutor.com has been positive overall, usage among students across FCPS has not been high enough to justify the cost to FCPS. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, Varsity Tutors will be providing online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families and no cost to the school division. More information about Varsity Tutors will be forthcoming. In the interim, these talking points may be helpful. As an alternative to Varsity Tutors, students may choose to access Schoolhouse, a free online, peer-to-peer tutoring service, founded by Sal Khan of Khan Academy. In addition to online tutoring options, FCPS has implemented a high impact tutoring program offered to identified students in grades 3-8 funded by the All in Virginia tutoring initiative, at no cost to the division.

You can learn more on FCPS’ Varsity Tutors webpage or Varsity Tutor’s website.
